Visual Art General Submissions (Fall 2026)

Blue Mesa Review welcomes visual art submissions for publication in its online magazine. Landscape or square artwork is strongly preferred, though exceptional portrait-oriented art may be accepted.

If possible, submit artwork at 72 dpi resolution, at least 900 pixels wide, and with a file size of at least 1 MB. Landscape or square orientation is strongly preferred; exceptional portrait-oriented work may be accepted. Submit online through Submittable; email and postal submissions are not accepted, with an exception for incarcerated writers. Work previously published in print or online is ineligible, including work published on blogs, Facebook, in magazines, anthologies, or chapbooks. Simultaneous submissions are accepted; notify the publication immediately and withdraw through Submittable if work is accepted elsewhere. Individuals previously affiliated with the University of New Mexico as students, staff, or faculty must have been unaffiliated for five years before submitting. Previously published Blue Mesa Review contributors must wait two years before submitting again. The general submission guidelines permit submissions to more than one genre but limit poetry, fiction, and nonfiction to one submission per genre; multiple submissions in the same genre are disregarded. General manuscript instructions specify Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx), standard 12-point type, numbered pages, double-spaced prose, and optionally single-spaced poetry. Reading past issues and Staff Writes posts is encouraged. Response time may exceed the standard two to six months; after six months, applicants may contact the publication with the subject line “Submission Query.”
