Residency Programs
Summer 2027 Historic cottage residencies
Hosted by Byrdcliffe
Woodstock, NY
The opportunity
Summer live/work residencies in historic cottages at the Byrdcliffe Arts Colony in Woodstock, New York, for artists across disciplines. The program offers a May–September 2027 session and two shorter summer sessions. Residents may participate in campus programming and are invited to exhibit in the annual AiR exhibition the following year. Cottage charges vary, utilities are additional, and limited merit- and need-based fellowships and grants are available to selected artists.
Requirements
Acceptance is based primarily on artistic excellence and demonstrated commitment to the applicant's field. Artists across disciplines may apply, including visual, literary and performing arts. The advertised summer options are May 3–September 28, May 3–July 21, and July 29–September 28, 2027. The source labels the shorter options as three-month sessions. Some Angelus-specific dates differ from the general schedule: its five-month listing ends September 30 and its later shorter listing begins July 21; confirm that cottage's dates before applying.
Required application materials: CV or creative resume in .doc, .docx or .pdf, and work samples. For applicants without a previous Byrdcliffe residency, a recommendation from a trusted mentor, peer or arts administrator is strongly suggested, not required. Name files last name_first name_file name. Writing samples: fiction, nonfiction, academic writing, prose or poetry, up to 15 pages; screenplay, stage play, graphic novel or treatment, up to 20 pages; use PDF, DOC or DOCX. Music, video and film: recordings up to 15 minutes and 20MB, in .m4a, .mp4, .avi, .mov or .m4v; a document containing audio/video links may be submitted instead, with a 15-minute maximum. Visual arts and crafts, including painting, sculpture, ceramics, woodworking and photography: up to 15 images in .jpg or TIFF.
Artists must bring their own tools, setup and materials, have a car or other transportation throughout the residency, cook their own meals, and arrange and pay for propane, electricity and Wi-Fi. Cottages are rustic and sparsely furnished; pets are not allowed. Cottage suitability varies by practice. Placements cannot accommodate encaustic painting or woodworking and metalworking requiring large machinery. Cottages have no slop sinks; some have no wall space, and only some have an additional studio room. Individual and co-applicant arrangements depend on the cottage; Yggdrasill also permits a shared cottage placed by Byrdcliffe.
Summer residency charges, listed as five-month / each shorter-session charge: Angelus $11,000 / $6,600; Echo and Little Angelus $4,500 / $2,700; Farmhouse $12,000 / $7,200; Fleur de Lis and Varenka $7,500 / $4,500; Quartette and Serenata $9,000 / $5,400; Yggdrasill $13,000 / $7,800; Sunrise and The Forge $7,350 / $4,410; Morningstar and Eveningstar $5,600 / $3,360; Skylights East and Skylights West $5,750 / $3,450; Chipmunk $4,750 / $2,850. The application deadline is conflicting: the structured listing says November 9, 2026, whereas application prose says November 9, 2027 at 11:59pm, with priority review for applications submitted by November 2, 2027. Confirm the applicable deadline through the application portal. Campus programming and the following year's AiR exhibition are invitations, not participation requirements.
