Summer 2027 Byrdcliffe Historic Cottage Residency
Woodstock, NY
The opportunity
A three- or five-month summer live/work cottage residency at the Byrdcliffe Arts Colony in Woodstock, New York. Residents receive rustic private cottage accommodations, may participate in summer programming, and are invited to exhibit in the following year's AiR exhibition. Cottage fees and available facilities vary, and limited merit- and need-based funding may cover part or all of the residency fee.
Requirements
Artists of all disciplines, based anywhere in the world and at any career stage, may apply. Collaborative residents must apply and be accepted individually. Required uploads are a CV or creative resume and work samples. Writing samples may be up to 15 pages for fiction, nonfiction, academic writing, prose, or poetry, or up to 20 pages for screenplays, stage plays, graphic novels, or treatments, submitted as PDF, DOC, or DOCX files. Music, video, and film samples may run up to 15 minutes and be up to 20 MB in M4A, MP4, AVI, MOV, or M4V format; a document containing audio or video links is also permitted. Visual-art and craft applicants may submit up to 15 JPG or TIFF images. Applicants without a previous Byrdcliffe residency are strongly encouraged, but not required, to include a recommendation letter. Artists must bring their own tools, setup, materials, and media; have a car or other transportation; cook their own meals; and arrange and pay for propane, electricity, and Wi-Fi. Pets are not allowed. Placements cannot accommodate encaustic painting, woodworking or metalworking requiring large machinery, or glass art. Residency fees vary by cottage and duration, with listed summer fees ranging from $2,700 for some three-month cottages to $13,000 for a five-month cottage; utilities are additional. Limited merit- and need-based fellowships and grants may provide partial to full residency-fee coverage through a free supplemental grant application. The source conflicts on the regular deadline, listing November 9, 2026 in one section but November 9, 2027 at 11:59pm in another, with a November 2, 2027 priority-review date.
