The opportunity

A communal residency at the Byrdcliffe Arts Colony in Woodstock, New York, for visual, literary, and performing artists of all backgrounds and career stages. Four 2027 sessions offer creative time, communal housing, and opportunities for open studios, presentations, studio visits, excursions, and other community activities. Each session hosts approximately 10 visual artists, two ceramic artists, and five literary or performing artists. Selected artists may receive merit- and need-based fellowships covering partial or full residency fees.

Requirements

Open to artists based anywhere in the world, at any career stage. Acceptance is based on artistic excellence and demonstrated commitment to one's field. Eligible disciplines include visual, literary, and performing arts: acting, animation, architecture, art conservation, art education, art history, book arts, ceramics/clay/pottery, costume/fashion design, digital fabrication and media, documentary, drawing, ecology, electronic and environmental arts, fiction, film, graphic design, history, illustration, installation, interdisciplinary arts, journalism, landscape architecture, literary nonfiction, literature, mathematics, mixed media, moving image, multimedia, music, new genres, nonfiction, painting, paper arts, performance art, philosophy, photography, playwriting, poetry, printmaking, screenwriting, sculpture, sound art, storytelling, textile/fiber arts/weaving, theater, and writing. Priority review date: November 16, 2026; applications close November 23, 2026 (the directory specifies 11:59 PM without a timezone). Sessions: May 21–June 15, June 25–July 20, July 30–August 24, and September 3–28, 2027; the directory describes the residency length as four weeks. Teams may apply, but collaborators must apply and be accepted individually. Pets are not allowed; residents may be granted leave during the residency. The directory lists participation in an open studio and an artist talk or presentation as additional expectations/opportunities. Artists must bring all art materials needed for their residency and appropriate linens; a separate linen rental package is available on request. There is no washer or dryer on campus. Own transportation is encouraged, not required. Private bedrooms are in shared campus housing, with shared kitchens and no meals provided. Villetta visual-art studios are assigned according to application needs and awarded fellowships; literary and performing residents staying there are not offered those studios, though separate accommodations may be discussed with the Operations Manager. Application fee: USD 30. Residency fees conflict between sources: the directory states USD 900 per artist per session, while the linked host page states USD 850 per artist per monthly session for all three communal lodges; confirm the current residency charge with the host. The host requires a non-refundable 50% deposit on acceptance and the balance one week before arrival; cancellation refunds of the residency fee are considered only if another resident fills the space. Limited merit- and need-based funding ranges from partial to full residency-fee coverage. General-need applicants must complete the Supplemental Grant Application at https://woodstockbyrdcliffeguild.submittable.com/submit/368787/2027-air-supplemental-grant-application. Listed awards include the Ford/Knauth Fellowship for LGBTQIA+ Artists (full fee), Bernard and Shirley Handel Playwright Fellowships (full fee), Wagner fellowship for Musical Performance (full fee), Milton and Sally Avery Fellowships for Visual Artists (full fee), Ceramics Artist Fellowship (full fee), Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant for Artists Affected by Natural Disaster (partial to full fee and stipend), and Donor Funded Arts & Crafts Fellowships (full or partial fee and stipend, open to all creative disciplines). Fellowships and stipends are awarded to select artists based on merit and need.
