September 2027 Early Career Artist Residency

Hosted by Anderson Center at Tower View

Red Wing, MN

AFT Curated Open to all media

The opportunity

A four-week residency in September 2027 at Tower View in Red Wing, Minnesota, for five early-career artists of any discipline living in Minnesota or one of New York City's five boroughs. The program supports concentrated creative time, generative art making, and exchange across an interdisciplinary cohort. Selected artists receive a $625/week stipend, lodging and studio space, art-making resources, documentation support, a travel honorarium, groceries, and chef-prepared communal dinners.

Requirements

Applicants must legally reside in Minnesota or one of New York City's five boroughs; must not be enrolled in any degree-granting program from application through the residency period; must self-identify as early-career artists with 2–10 years of generative experience; and must have a practice centered on generating and creating entirely new work. Early-career artists must have focused direction and goals, have yet to be substantially celebrated within their field, the media, funding circles, or the public at large, and be vocational rather than avocational, academic, amateur, or educational artists. Artists with more than 10 years in the field are generally ineligible even if under-recognized; excluded from that calculation are time in degree-granting programs, dancing in work created by others, remounting other choreographers' work, and time away from artistic work because of circumstances such as having children, caring for family members, or long-term illness. Age is not a factor. The residency lasts four weeks in September 2027. Collaborators must apply and be accepted individually. Pets are not allowed. Listed expectations/opportunities include participation in public programming and an open studio with fellow residents, giving an artist talk or presentation, and leading a public workshop. Housing is a private bedroom in a shared on-campus facility; housing is partially accessible (50% or more), and studios/facilities are listed as ADA compliant. Application and residency fees are both $0. The artist stipend is $2,500 ($625/week); the page also lists $550 in travel/material stipends and $450 in documentation support. Groceries, access to a private kitchen, and some meals are provided. Applications are due January 12, 2027, at 12:00 p.m. noon CST. Consult the application form for complete eligibility details.
