Fort McDowell, AZ

AFT Curated Open to all media

The opportunity

A six-week hybrid creative incubator exploring personal and ancestral narratives through memory, transformation, and embodied creativity. Artists participate in five weeks of virtual workshops, artist circles, talks, and interdisciplinary creative prompts, followed by an overnight graduation gathering in Fort McDowell, Arizona. Participants work from their own studios and may develop new work or continue existing projects. Applications are free; accepted artists pay a $1,000 residency fee.

About this call

Memory, transformation, embodied creativity, and personal and ancestral narratives through the West African principle of Sankofa.

Requirements

Artists from all disciplines and locations worldwide may apply through the online application form. Eligible practices include visual arts, digital media, photography, film, writing, performance, sound, craft, textile arts, social practice, and hybrid forms. The program is described as six weeks: five weeks of virtual programming on Microsoft Teams from artists' own studios, followed by an overnight in-person graduation ceremony during Week 6 in Fort McDowell, Arizona. Accepted artists pay a flat $1,000 residency fee covering the full program, required creative materials, the overnight ceremony, shared lodging, communal meals, ceremonial gifts, and round-trip transportation between Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and the accommodations. No internal scholarships are currently offered; letters of support are available. Artists are encouraged, rather than required, to attend weekly virtual sessions, participate in cohort discussions and reflective practices, engage with creative prompts, and share works-in-progress collaboratively. No finished artwork is required; artists may develop new work or continue ongoing projects at their own pace. Artists are invited to contribute one work or work-in-progress created during the residency to an exhibition in the Sankofa Virtual Gallery.
