About this call

Memory, transformation, cultural storytelling, personal and ancestral narratives, and embodied creativity

Requirements

Artists from all disciplines and locations worldwide may apply through the online application form. Disciplines include visual arts, digital media, photography, film, writing, performance, sound, craft, textile arts, social practice, and hybrid forms. Application is free; accepted artists pay a flat $1,000 residency fee for the full six-week hybrid program. The program comprises five weeks of virtual programming on Microsoft Teams, completed from artists' own home studios, and an overnight in-person graduation gathering during week six at a private location in Kissimmee, Florida. The fee includes virtual programming, required creative materials mailed or delivered digitally, shared overnight lodging, communal meals, ceremonial gifts, closing activities, and round-trip transportation between Orlando International Airport and the accommodations. No internal scholarships are currently offered; letters of support are available. Artists are encouraged to attend weekly virtual sessions, participate in cohort discussions and reflective practices, engage with creative prompts, and share works-in-progress collaboratively. A finished artwork is not required; artists may develop new work or continue existing projects at their own pace. Artists are invited, not required, to contribute one work or work-in-progress created during the residency to the Sankofa Virtual Gallery. The stated six-week duration differs from the separately listed July 13–15, 2027 residency dates.
