Requirements

Open to emerging Native American artists who are enrolled members of a US Federally Recognized Tribe; emerging means without gallery representation. Tribal ID or certificate status documentation is required. Priority is given to Tribes of the Pacific Northwest, including Washington state Tribes and the Schistu'umsh (Coeur d'Alene Tribe of Indians). Students currently enrolled at Spokane Colleges are ineligible, and the residency does not qualify for college credit. Formal training is not required, but applicants should have previous experience in their preferred medium. The residency runs January 5–March 26, 2027; applicants must agree to be present on campus for 35 hours per week during the three-month term. A spouse, partner, or family members may accompany the resident; provide their names and relationships. Submit one application online through CaFÉ or by mail postmarked by the application deadline. Required materials: name, mailing address, phone, email, Tribal affiliation and documentation; prior art experiences or a CV; an artist statement of no more than two pages; 5–10 images of recent visual artwork, with no audio or video submissions; an image list giving each numbered work’s title, medium, size, year, and optional description; years working in creative disciplines; a letter of intent addressing artistic goals, intended use of the residency, potential collaborations, proposed projects, and equipment needs; proposed creative disciplines and techniques; a written statement of interests in professional-development engagement with students and community audiences; and two professional references with name, email, phone, and relationship. Accepted image file types are JPG, JPEG, Office 365, PDF, and PNG; use the filename format “First Name_Last Name_1.jpg”; the stated upload maximum is 30MB. Do not send portfolios or actual artwork; images only, and applications will not be returned. Mail entries to CCS Central Services, Attn: Cozette Phillips, MS-3060, 3939 N. Freya, Spokane, WA 99217. Studio disciplines include ceramics, drawing, metals/jewelry, painting, printmaking, digital art, sculpture, and mixed media. Public events and direct community interaction are chosen by the artist rather than mandated. Furnished housing includes a kitchen and wifi. Three monthly stipend payments of $3,000 each support living costs and art supplies; the separate travel stipend to and from Spokane must not exceed $500. The selected applicant will be notified by November 10, 2026. Entry is free.
