About this call
Cultural preservation and reclamation, Indigenous identity, community building, cross-cultural dialogue, and professional development.
Requirements
Open nationally to emerging Native American artists enrolled in a US Federally Recognized Tribe; emerging means without gallery representation. Priority is given to Pacific Northwest Tribes, particularly Washington state Tribes and the Schistu'umsh (Coeur d'Alene Tribe of Indians). Tribal ID or certificate status documentation is required. Students currently enrolled at Spokane Colleges are ineligible, and the residency does not qualify for college credit. Formal training is not required, but applicants should have previous experience in their preferred medium. Applicants must agree to be on campus 35 hours per week during the three-month residency.
Submission limit: one application. Provide name, mailing address, phone, email, Tribal affiliation and documentation, prior art experience or CV, years working in creative disciplines, and an artist statement no longer than two pages. Submit 5–10 images of recent visual artwork; no audio or video. Accepted file types are JPG, JPEG, Office 365, PDF, and PNG, with a stated maximum upload of 30MB. Use the filename format “First Name_Last Name_1.jpg”. Include an image list with each work's number, title, medium, size, and completion year; image descriptions are optional. Send images only, not portfolios or actual artwork; applications will not be returned.
Include a letter of intent explaining the residency's contribution to artistic goals, planned use of the opportunity, personal artwork goals, potential collaborations, proposed projects, and equipment needs. Identify proposed creative disciplines and techniques. Supply a written statement on professional-development interests involving students and community audiences, plus two professional references with name, email, phone, and relationship. Public events and direct public interaction are at the resident artist's discretion. A spouse, partner, or family members may accompany the resident; provide their names and relationships if applicable.
Studio disciplines include ceramics, drawing, metals/jewelry, painting, printmaking, digital art, sculpture, and mixed media.
