The opportunity

Maryland Hall's Openshaw Artist-in-Residence Program offers emerging artists a two-month studio residency in Annapolis, with a $500 materials stipend and basic exhibition marketing. Artists develop a collection or series and conclude their residency with a solo exhibition in the Openshaw Balcony Gallery, where the work remains on display for two months. This call names residencies January through March 2027.

Requirements

Applicants must reside in the DC-Maryland-Virginia area. Commercial artists and nonprofit arts groups are ineligible. Application materials listed are application forms, a project description, an artist statement, and artwork/portfolio. The program has one studio, rotating artists every two months; the resident visual artist must develop a collection or series for the Openshaw Balcony Gallery. Artists are expected to use the studio a minimum of 15–20 hours per week; studios cannot be used as office space. Available building hours are Monday–Friday, 8 am–11 pm, and Saturday, 8 am–5 pm. Upon completing the residency, artists curate and install their work, which remains exhibited for two months. The $500 material stipend is for materials and supplies needed for the artist's exhibit. Artists unable to use their studio because of life changes must address this immediately with Maryland Hall staff. After the residency, artists may apply to the general AIR program if space is available. Application, participation, and additional fees are all listed as none. Listed artistic fields include applied arts, architecture, dance, design, digital, drawing, education, fashion, film, installation, interdisciplinary, painting, performance, photography, printmaking, public art, research, sculpture, social practice, sound art, textiles, video, visual arts, and writing.
