About this call
Archives-based scholarship on Ming Fay’s practice, including ecology and environmental thought; transnational identity and migration; Asian diasporic histories; material experimentation and sculpture; art, science, and spirituality; nature as mythology and cultural symbolism; Downtown New York art networks and artist collectives; and public art and site-specific installations.
Requirements
Senior Research Fellowship eligibility: professors, established independent scholars, curators, postdoctoral researchers, and advanced PhD candidates. Exploratory Research Fellowship eligibility: master’s students, early PhD students, emerging scholars, artists, and curators. Research must be conducted between January 4 and December 10, 2027 across New York City-based partner institutions. Senior fellows undertake sustained archival research and produce original scholarship developed to a stage suitable for publication, academic dissemination, exhibition development, or inclusion in a larger scholarly project; examples include a peer-reviewed journal article of approximately 6,000–10,000 words, a book or dissertation chapter, a critical essay, or substantial exhibition research. Exploratory fellows undertake short-term archival research and produce a project demonstrating sustained engagement with archival materials and new perspectives on Ming Fay’s work; examples include a research paper, article, report, dissertation chapter, documentary film, essay, or exhibition proposal. All fellows must email their final track-appropriate research project and a 2–3-page report summarizing research activities, archival engagement, and outcomes to apa.institute@nyu.edu by January 31, 2028. The page lists application forms, project description, CV, cost estimation, artwork/portfolio, and recommendation letter as application materials. Senior grants are up to $7,500; Exploratory grants are up to $2,500. Final amounts depend on the proposed budget, demonstrated research needs, proposal strength and feasibility, and available resources. Eligible expenses must be incurred between award notification and December 10, 2027 and may include travel to and from New York, temporary housing and local transportation during research travel, translation, research materials, documentation or technical support, and publication preparation including permissions and image preparation. Fellows receive on-site access at NYU Special Collections, archival staff consultation, digital access to relevant Asia Art Archive holdings, Ming Fay Studio / Estate research access as appropriate, and reading room access at Asia Art Archive in America. Visiting Scholar or Research Affiliate appointments at NYU are subject to appropriateness and university procedures. No application, participation, or additional fees.
