Requirements
Applicants must have a bachelor's degree or equivalent experience; graduate students are preferred. Relevant backgrounds include Art History, Visual Culture/Criticism, Latin American History, Cultural Anthropology, Sociology, Chicano/a/x Studies, or equivalent fields. MACLA prioritizes candidates interested in arts and culture careers and encourages applications even when not every listed qualification is met. Applicants must work on-site in San José, lift at least 30 lbs., and meet health and safety requirements, including COVID-19 vaccination. The fellowship lasts 10 months, totaling 935 hours, with 15–25 hours/week during the academic year and 25–30 hours/week during summer. Pay is $34.45/hour; funding is contingent on continued financial support from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. No travel or relocation stipend is provided. Approximately one-third of the fellowship involves gallery installation, including painting walls, using power tools, handling artwork, and quarterly installation work. Duties also include exhibition planning, evaluation and de-installation; producing checklists, graphics, catalogues, documentation, curatorial statements, brochures, and online and printed content; artist studio visits and interviews; local and regional institutional visits; one visit to a national Latinx arts institution; and at least one gallery front-desk shift during Wednesday–Sunday, 12–5 PM gallery hours. Eligible fellows receive paid sick time according to California law. Email a complete application to HR@maclaarte.org with the subject line “MACLA Curatorial Fellow Position.” Only complete applications will be considered; the captured page does not specify required application documents. Only qualified candidates will be contacted, and applicants must not make follow-up calls, emails, or social media inquiries. Applications are free. The narrative states an ongoing application deadline, while the page's opportunity-details panel lists December 31, 2026; the deadline is therefore conflicting.
