Joshua Tree Highlands Artist Residency 2027–2028
Joshua Tree, CA
The opportunity
JTHAR offers six artists individual housing and workspace in the high desert near Joshua Tree National Park for one of three seven-week residency sessions in 2027–2028. Each resident receives a $1,500 scholarship toward materials, transportation, or meals. The program includes a mid-residency review and an optional open-studio exhibition.
Requirements
Open to US and international artists age 18 or older. Eligible practices include photography, drawing, painting, sculpture, film, video, new media, installation, fiction and non-fiction writing, interdisciplinary work, social practice, and architecture; musical submissions are not accepted this cycle. Visual artists must submit at least five images, and every applicant must submit a project proposal. Selection is based on portfolio and proposal merit, with priority given to proposals anticipating transformations and discoveries inspired by place. Residents must attend the full seven weeks, donate one completed work to JTHAR, arrange their own transportation, and have a vehicle during the stay. Partners, family members, and pets cannot be accommodated. The $45 application fee is non-refundable and cannot be waived. Sessions are stated as May 4–June 22, 2027; August 24–October 12, 2027; and January 11–February 29, 2028, although JTHAR's summary reportedly describes the winter session more broadly as January–March 2028, so applicants should confirm those winter dates.
