The opportunity

The Center for Art and Advocacy's fellowship, formerly Right of Return, supports directly impacted individual artists across creative disciplines whose practices advance social change and seek to end mass incarceration. The page describes six fellowships offering a $20,000 grant, mentorship, and community-building opportunities, with one fellowship designated for an artist aged 18–24. The listing's deadline and cohort years conflict with the body text.

About this call

Social change and ending mass incarceration

Requirements

Applicants must be individual artists aged 18 or older at application; organizations and nonprofits are not funded. Applicants must themselves have been incarcerated in U.S. prisons, jails, or detention centers. Applicants detained in migrant detention centers must have attained U.S. citizenship by the application's opening. Applicants and projects must be U.S.-based, including all 50 states, Washington, DC, and Puerto Rico. Artists of every creative discipline and career stage may apply, with or without formal training. Named practices include visual art, film, music, creative writing, performance, design, and multidisciplinary practices. Artists must collaborate with an advocacy organization during project development and/or execution; that organization need not be secured at application, and the Center can help connect fellows to advocates. Application materials listed are application forms, artist statement, artwork/portfolio, project description, and CV. External reviewers select six fellows to receive a $20,000 grant, mentorship, and community-building opportunities; one fellowship is designated for an artist aged 18–24. No application, participation, or additional fees are stated. Dates conflict: the header gives October 25, 2026 at 21:45 UTC, while the body gives an application window of September 15 through October 26, 2025 and refers to both a 2027 fellowship and six new 2026 fellows. The applicable deadline and cohort year cannot be resolved from this capture.
