The opportunity

VCCA's Fall 2027 artist residency at Mt. San Angelo in Amherst, Virginia, offers writers, visual artists, and composers time to focus on their work within a community of artists. Residencies include a private bedroom and en-suite bath, an individual studio, and three prepared meals each day. Scheduling is flexible, with stays up to six weeks. Readings, open studios, and other community engagement are entirely optional.

Requirements

Open to artists based anywhere in the world, at any career stage, creating original literary, visual, or musical/sound work. Undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students may apply, but projects involving pure academic scholarship are not accepted. Selection is by discipline-specific peer review based on professional achievement or promise. Collaborators must apply and be accepted individually. Pets are not allowed. English is listed as the residency language. The narrative states stays of up to six weeks with no minimum length; the structured residency-length field lists 1–6 weeks. Community readings, open studios, and other engagement are optional.

Eligible disciplines include book arts, choreography, digital media, documentary, drawing, environmental arts, fiction, film, illustration, installation arts, interdisciplinary arts, journalism, literary nonfiction, literature, mixed media, multimedia arts, music, new genres, nonfiction, opera, painting, paper arts, performance art, photography, playwriting, poetry, printmaking, public art, screenwriting, sculpture, social practice, sound art, storytelling, symphony, theater, visual arts, and writing.

The application fee is USD 30. Applicants experiencing hardship may request an application-fee waiver from vcca@vcca.com in advance of the deadline. One application and one application fee per deadline cover consideration for a residency and all fully funded fellowships for which the applicant is eligible.

The actual residency cost is USD 240 per artist per day. VCCA requests USD 105 per day and welcomes contributions up to the full USD 240 daily cost from those able to pay. Artists unable to pay USD 105 per day will be considered for financial assistance; acceptance is based on work quality rather than ability to pay. VCCA distributes USD 150,000 in financial assistance annually and offers rotating fully funded fellowships. Accepted artists demonstrating financial need who do not receive a fully funded fellowship are supported through financial assistance. Certain fully funded fellowships offer stipends/honoraria.

Housing is a private bedroom in a shared on-campus housing facility. Housing and studio/facility accessibility are listed as partially accessible (50% or more). Residents have access to a shared kitchen.
