Hosted by Virginia Beach Art Center
Virginia Beach, VA
The opportunity
Juried exhibition at Virginia Beach Art Center, February 5–28, 2027, inviting artists to put a twist on an artwork of their choice. Ideas include changing the original medium, adding something, or creating a personal interpretation inspired by another artist. Broad interpretations, including abstract art, collages, photography, jewelry, and other art forms, are welcomed. Awards are $250 for first place, $200 for second place, $100 for third place, and six honorable mentions. All exhibited work must be for sale.
About this call
Give your artwork of choice a TWIST, inspired by an iconic artwork or another artist.
Requirements
Open to local/regional artists aged 18 or older who can drop off work in person. Out-of-town artists may enter and, if accepted, ship via UPS or FEDEX only, with a return label; no exceptions. Work must relate to the theme, have been created within the last two years, and never have appeared in any of the center's art shows. Broad interpretation and abstract work are encouraged. The theme instructions allow copying a work in a different medium or creating a personal version, but the general rules prohibit reproductions, require original work created by the submitting artist, and the form requires verification that work is not copied from another artist. All work must be free of copyright infringement and suitable for viewers of all ages. Explain any AI use and process in the medium field.
Non-refundable entry fee: $30 for up to three pieces for non-supporters or $25 for annual supporters, plus $5 per additional entry, up to five entries per artist. Payment after submitting the form is required for consideration. For one 3D piece, the second and third entry boxes may show additional angles; when submitting three pieces, using the fourth and fifth boxes incurs the additional fees. Selection is juried. Complete the on-page application by January 14, 2027, at 11:59pm; late submissions are not accepted. Supply name, email, website, social media handles separated by semicolons, phone, address, and each work's title/year, medium and AI process, price, framed dimensions, image, and statement of 30 words or fewer. Upload JPEG/.jpg images, maximum 20MB each, renamed on the device before upload; instructions specify last_first_title.jpeg, while form helper text also specifies lastname_title. Do not use special characters. Images should be professionally lit, photographed straight on, and cropped to the artwork without frames or surroundings. Statements may be edited for clarity, length, or typos. Proof all information before submission; prices and statements cannot be amended after the deadline. Check this page for acceptance notifications on January 22.
Original hand-pulled prints, photography, and digital art must be limited editions of 25 or fewer, signed and numbered. All work must be visibly signed: 2D on front or back, 3D underneath. A sold photography/digital print cannot be replaced by another copy of the accepted work. Maximum 2D width is 60 inches including frame, and weight is 40 pounds or less. A 3D base may not exceed 20 inches square; artists must install and move 3D work over 40 pounds. Size/weight exceptions and special installation require advance clearance from the curator before submission.
Presentation must be professional. Gallery-wrapped canvases with edges at least 1 inch wide must have painted sides and no visible side staples. Canvas, cradle board, or other substrates with edges under 1 inch require frames. Photography on metal/aluminum sheets need not be framed. Hanging wires must be tight and one-quarter down from the frame top; no sawtooth hangers or eyehooks, except built-in sawtooth hangers on metal/aluminum photography. Label the back or underside with artist name and work title. Work may be refused at delivery for presentation, hanging, craftsmanship, or differences from the juried image.
Early drop-off: January 30, 10:30am–3pm. Regular drop-off: February 2, 10:30am–4:30pm; no work accepted afterward. Pickup: March 2, 10:30am–4:30pm. Work must remain on view and for sale for the entire exhibition, with prices consistent with the artist's other work. The center retains 30% of sales for invitational artists and 25% for resident and exhibiting artists of the center. Sales checks are ready for pickup by the 10th of the month following the exhibition's close. Awards: first place $250, second place $200, third place $100, and six honorable mentions. Submitting images grants promotional-use permission to Virginia Beach Art Center. Virginia Beach Art Center and The Artists Gallery disclaim liability for artwork damage before, during, or after the exhibition and for copyright infringement. Applicants must agree to the rules, liability statement, and photo permission.
