Hosted by Data Through Design

The opportunity

Data Through Design seeks proposals for its 10th annual multimedia group exhibition at BRIC Arts Media in Brooklyn, March 26–April 11, 2027. Projects should explore the theme of time through data, using or referencing at least one NYC Open Data dataset. The exhibition welcomes digital, analog, physical, performance, sound, walks, installations, creative coding, participatory mapping, drawings, and other formats. Both returning and new artists are encouraged to apply.

About this call

Time: reflections, reverberations, traces, change, and the role of data across the past, present, and future.

Requirements

Proposals must consider the 2027 theme of time, surface unique stories or original perspectives through data, and show how NYC Open Data will be used. Artists must reference or use at least one NYC Open Data dataset; other datasets, including experimental collection systems, are welcome. Submit through the linked form: a 200-word proposal describing the concept, intended audience, gallery presentation, interactivity, and maintenance; three project mockup images showing at least three views or sides, labeled with materials, dimensions, colors, electricity and screen needs, and any special installation needs or excessive size or weight; visual demonstration of visitor interaction for interactive projects; a list of at least one NYC Open Data dataset and any other datasets used directly or indirectly; a 100-word explanation of how data will be incorporated and presented; and a portfolio containing at least three previous projects. Explain your role in collaborative work samples. All links, images, and files must work, be accessible, and be attached. Review considers proposal and mockup clarity, feasibility, and past creative experience. Past artists are particularly encouraged, but new artists are also welcome; artists may revisit previous DxD themes in relation to time. Work must be installation-ready by March 19, 2027, with delivery to BRIC Arts Media March 22–24. Dates are subject to change. The $900 stipend is paid half in the weeks leading up to the exhibition and half after the exhibition; applicants must be approved to work in the US to receive it. The detailed proposal instructions specify November 15, 2026 at 11:59 PM EST as the deadline, although the listing header instead displays November 15, 2027.
