Call for Artists: King County Wastewater Treatment, Elliott West Wet Weather Treatment Station Upgrade

4Culture, in partnership with King County Wastewater Treatment Division, seeks one artist or artist-led team to create site-specific architectural glass artwork for the Elliott West Wet Weather Treatment Station upgrade in Seattle. The artwork will address the east glass façade adjacent to the interior stairwell and the upper north-facing glass window. The project theme, “Water’s Edge,” explores Elliott Bay’s changing shoreline and the station’s relationship to its neighborhoods, surrounding landscape, and essential public infrastructure. The listed commission budget is $40,000.

Water’s Edge

Geographic eligibility: United States. One artist or artist-led team will be selected. Develop original, site-specific artwork for the east glass façade adjacent to the station’s interior stairwell and the upper north-facing glass window. The artwork must respond to the building’s architectural character, surrounding environment, and role in essential public infrastructure, and should be thoughtfully integrated with the site. It will inspire and engage the broader community through relationships to Elliott Bay and its shoreline transformation over the last 130 years; the Interbay and Lower Queen Anne neighborhoods and larger community; and the surrounding landscape, Elliott Bay, and Puget Sound. The selected artist or team will work closely with 4Culture, Wastewater Treatment, the project consultant, and Laura Haddad of Haddad/Drugan on the artwork’s integration into the architecture. Collaborative conversations must consider Haddad’s history with Undercurrents at the Denny Way/Lake Union CSO and her design for the station’s west-façade perforated metal panels; the artists’ design timelines will overlap. The listed minimum and maximum project budget are both $40,000; this is a project budget, including for an artist-led team, rather than a stated individual payment. Entry is free.
