The opportunity

Chinkapin Craftstead offers artist residencies of up to two weeks between March and November on 300 acres near Woodbury, Tennessee. Up to three people can stay at a time, each with a private single-room cabin and access to shared kitchen and studio spaces. The land includes a garden, hiking trails, old-growth trees, springs and meadows. Artists have time for their creative process without any requirement to complete or exhibit work.

Requirements

Application materials listed are application forms, artwork/portfolio, an artist statement and a project description. Artistic fields listed include Applied Arts, Architecture, Dance, Design, Digital, Drawing, Education, Fashion, Film, Installation, Interdisciplinary, Painting, Performance, Photography, Printmaking, Public Art, Research, Sculpture, Social Practice, Sound Art, Textiles, Video, Visual Arts and Writing. Residencies last up to two weeks between March and November, with up to three people hosted at a time. No application, participation or additional fees are charged. Artists are not expected to complete or exhibit work; hosting an artist talk is welcome but not required. The setting is rural, and parts of the land are rugged; applicants needing mobility or physical-accessibility information should email before applying. Each artist has a private single-room cabin. Residents share a main cabin with wifi and a kitchen, with a private outdoor shower and composting toilet/outhouse nearby. The main cabin and a multi-use pavilion also serve as studio spaces. For residents without a car, pickup from the Nashville airport/bus station is offered, along with rides to town for errands two to three times a week. Two stipends per year are offered to Black/Indigenous trans artists as part of their residency: $1000 per person plus a gift card to a local health food store.
