The opportunity
IslandWood's Artist in Residence program brings teaching artists from various disciplines, media, cultures, experiences, and ages to work with elementary school and graduate students. Visiting professional artists lead individual and collaborative art projects. Residencies typically last three days and two nights, Monday through Wednesday, from October to May. IslandWood provides on-site lodging and meals, a round-trip ferry ticket if applicable, materials reimbursement, and an honorarium of up to $1,000 based on the number of workshops taught.
Requirements
Teaching artists of any discipline are invited. Stays are typically 3 days/2 nights, Monday through Wednesday from October to May. Artists lead workshops for 4th–6th grade students on Tuesday and Wednesday, lasting 75–150 minutes with approximately 12–15 students per group. Artists can also offer a professional-development workshop for graduate students and staff. Teaching facilities include the art studio, learning classrooms, or outdoors. Selection considers prior teaching experience, relevance of workshop material to IslandWood, and whether the medium balances the current artist roster. Listed application materials are application forms, project description, CV, artwork/portfolio, and artist statement. Listed artistic fields include applied arts, dance, design, digital, drawing, education, fashion, film, installation, interdisciplinary, painting, performance, photography, printmaking, public art, research, sculpture, social practice, sound art, textiles, video, visual arts, and writing. There are no application, participation, or additional fees. IslandWood provides lodging and meals on-site for the duration, a round-trip ferry ticket if applicable, and reimbursement for materials. Artists receive an honorarium of up to $1,000; the amount depends on the number of student and adult workshops taught.
