The opportunity

Museum of Glass invites artists to develop new ideas, techniques, or an existing series through a Visiting Artist Residency in its Hot Shop in Tacoma, Washington. Selected artists receive use of the Hot Shop and assistance from its team for up to five days. Collaborative and cross-disciplinary proposals are strongly encouraged. One project connecting art and science will receive the Sheldon Levin Memorial Visiting Artist Residency. The application portal heading names 2027, while its descriptive text refers to 2026 residencies.

About this call

Exploring new ideas and techniques; collaborative and cross-disciplinary projects; connections between art and science for the Sheldon Levin Memorial Visiting Artist Residency.

Requirements

Open to artists from all artistic mediums. Artists are eligible for a Museum of Glass residency only every three years; an artist awarded a 2025 residency should not apply again until 2028. The selection committee seeks clear, concise proposals supported by photographs of prototypes or concept sketches, with priority given to artists experimenting with new ideas or techniques. Collaborative proposals and ideas crossing disciplines or materials are encouraged, not required. One project connecting science and art will be awarded the Sheldon Levin Memorial Visiting Artist Residency. Artists work up to five days in full view of museum visitors during public hours, Wednesday–Sunday, 10am–5pm. Support includes exclusive Hot Shop use, up to three Hot Shop Team members, and two eight-hour days of basic coldworking. Artists may present a public lecture on Sunday, 1–2pm. Artists retain ownership of work created and may donate up to two works: one made during the residency for the museum collection, selected with museum staff, and one for fundraising. Artists are responsible for travel, accommodations, color, and special-order materials, and must initiate packing, insurance, and artwork shipping arrangements before the residency. Applications are submitted through Submittable; late applications will not be reviewed. Deadline information conflicts: the external listing states November 1, 2026 at 12:00 AM PDT; the portal displays 'Mon, Nov 2, 2026 3:00 AM'; its prose states 'Saturday, November 1, 2026' at midnight PST; and its FAQ gives 11/01/25. Applicants should confirm the deadline and residency year with the organizer.
