The opportunity

A six-week hybrid residency welcoming artists in all disciplines to explore personal and ancestral narratives through reflection, experimentation, and community. Five weeks of virtual workshops, cohort circles, artist talks, and studio prompts on Microsoft Teams culminate in an overnight gathering in Waddy, Kentucky, March 13–14, 2027. Artists develop new work or continue existing projects, with an optional exhibition in the Sankofa Virtual Gallery.

About this call

Sankofa: returning to the past to reclaim what was forgotten; personal and ancestral narratives, cultural grounding, and creative renewal.

Requirements

Artists in all disciplines may apply from anywhere in the world through the online application form. There is no application fee. Accepted artists pay $1,000 tuition for the full six-week hybrid residency. Payment is due within 48 hours of receiving the acceptance email; a place is not guaranteed until full payment or the first payment-plan installment is received. Payment plans are available at adjusted rates. All fees and installments are 100% nonrefundable, including for withdrawal, schedule conflicts, emergencies, travel issues, or inability to attend the in-person gathering. The first five weeks take place virtually on Microsoft Teams from artists' own workspaces. Attendance at weekly virtual sessions, cohort discussions, reflective practices, and sharing works-in-progress is encouraged; no finished artwork is required. Artists are expected to attend the core overnight graduation gathering in Waddy, Kentucky, March 13–14, 2027. Tuition includes virtual programming, required creative materials, shared overnight lodging, round-trip transportation between Louisville International Airport (SDF) and the accommodations, communal meals, ceremonial gifts, and closing activities. No internal scholarships are currently offered; letters of support, guidance on external micro-grants, and flexible payment options are available. Contribution of one residency-created work or work-in-progress to the Sankofa Virtual Gallery exhibition is strongly encouraged, with freedom of form, medium, and completion level. Public engagement, including virtual artist talks and creative reflections, is optional.
