2027 Great Basin National Park Artist in Residence
Hosted by National Park Service
Baker, NV
The opportunity
Three artists will be selected for 2–3-week residencies at Great Basin National Park in 2027, exploring the region's landscape, culture and wildlife while developing their artistic practice and connecting with the public. The program welcomes visual artists, literary artists, musicians and artists working in other creative media. Winter residencies take place during January and February with park housing; summer residencies during July and August and fall residencies during September and October are camping only. One residency is reserved for an artist who lives and works in Nevada or Utah. Lodging or camping accommodation is provided according to the season.

Requirements
Open to professional visual artists, literary artists, musicians and artists working in other creative media who reside anywhere. One of the three residencies is reserved for an artist who lives and works in Nevada or Utah; that artist may apply for any season. Apply for all seasons for which you wish to be considered. Each residency lasts 2–3 weeks. Each artist must present one public program in the park during the residency; the winter program may instead take place in a local school. Submit a professional resume and a personal statement addressing "Why Great Basin National Park?", a public-program concept, and your ability to reside in a remote location and work independently. Visual artists must provide 6–12 images, each labeled with the artist's name, work title, medium and dimensions. Writers and poets must provide 6–12 short works or one long work, each labeled with the artist's name and title; examples include six short poems or other short writing samples of artistic merit of less than one page each, or one short story, essay or manuscript excerpt of no more than 10 pages. Composers, musicians, performing artists, video and film artists must provide no more than six short selections totaling about six minutes, or one long selection of about 10 minutes. All materials must be submitted through the online process; additional materials or links to additional materials result in disqualification. Winter housing includes a furnished private bedroom in shared living space, laundry facilities, major kitchen appliances and basic utensils and dishes; the artist must bring everything else needed. Pets and smoking are not allowed. Winter road closures, deep snow and storms may limit access and travel to amenities in Ely. Summer and fall are camping-only residencies, and applicants should be familiar and confident with camping before applying. Great Basin National Park Foundation supplies camping gear; artists must provide their own ice, and a cooler with block ice is recommended. Campgrounds have no internet service, cell service is limited, and public Wi-Fi is available at visitor centers. Showers are available in Baker. The campsite has no electricity unless the artist brings their own RV or camper. Summer monsoonal weather is common. Fall artists may choose to overlap with the September Astronomy Festival. There are no application, participation or additional fees.
